About IGNOU Distance Education – 2026
IGNOU, the Indira Gandhi National Open University, is a Central University established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament, headquartered in New Delhi. It’s the largest university in India by enrolment, serving students across every state and a number of international locations.
The university offers programmes across arts, commerce, science, management, IT, education, social work, and library science, spanning bachelor’s, master’s, diploma, and certificate levels.
Admission runs in two cycles each year, January and July, and nearly the entire process — application, fee payment, assignment submission, and exam form filing — is handled online.
On entrance exams specifically: the overwhelming majority of IGNOU’s programmes, including BA, B.Com, BBA, BCA, MA, and MBA, admit students directly based on their qualifying marks, with no entrance test at all. Entrance exams apply only to a small, specific set of programmes — B.Ed, PhD, and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing.
IGNOU’s degrees hold UGC-DEB entitlement and NAAC A++ accreditation, and are recognised for government employment, competitive examinations, private-sector employment, and further study, both in India and, subject to the receiving institution’s own evaluation, abroad.
